Hank Murdoch wore the same brown suit to every game from 1981 to 1988. It had been repaired so many times the tailor offered him a loyalty discount. He declined. "Loyalty's free," he said. That was the most Murdoch sentence ever spoken.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario. Played junior. Wasn't good enough. Coached instead. Fired from three teams for "philosophical differences with management" (punched a GM in Muskegon, threw a chair in Kalamazoo, and allegedly released a live chicken in an owner's office in Saginaw). He denied the chicken. Nobody believed him.

His first team meeting lasted four minutes: "I don't care if you're talented. I care if you're tough, if you're weird, and if you'll run through a wall for the guy next to you." Nobody left.

His clipboard was legendary. Plays so complicated the players couldn't read them and so simple they
worked anyway. The bottom of every page said the same thing: FORECHECK. FINISH. NO QUIT.

He smiled exactly once in seven seasons: when Knuckles scored his last career goal in '86. Fourteen
people saw it. None of them can agree on what it looked like.
