Kristof Lindqvist arrived in Hartford in the fall of 1982 with a bag of hockey sticks and an espresso machine. The sticks were Koho. The espresso machine was Italian. Both were non-negotiable.

He didn't understand fighting. "Why would you punch him? Just score on him." He didn't understand dump and chase. "Why would you throw away the puck? I just got it." He didn't understand North American hockey food. He brought European pastries to practice on Fridays. The team pretended to make fun of him. They ate every single pastry.

His stickhandling was the most beautiful thing anyone at The Icebox had ever seen. He moved the puck like it was attached to his blade by a string. Defenders lunged and missed. Goalies guessed and lost. He made the game look like art and he made
it look effortless.
