Phil Dempsey played on the fourth line and averaged 2 minutes and 13 seconds of ice time per game. He sat on the bench so long they named a section of it after him. "Dempsey's Corner" was the spot nearest the heater. It had a permanent butt imprint.

He was not fast. He was not skilled. He was not tough. He was, by every measurable hockey metric,
barely a professional hockey player. And he was the most beloved man on the Hartford Beauties.

He was the loudest voice on the bench. He was the first to congratulate every goal. He was the best
interview on the team: reporters quoted him more than Fontaine because Splinters always had the
perfect line. He signed more autographs at fan events than anyone. Kids loved him because he
looked like someone's fun uncle.

"I'm basically a fan with a better seat," he told the Courant. He wasn't wrong. But the team needed
him more than they knew. Every locker room needs the guy who keeps everyone laughing. Splinters
was that guy for nine years.

On the last night at The Icebox, Murdoch's replacement gave Splinters 6 minutes of ice time.
The most of his career. The crowd gave him a standing ovation. He cried on the bench. Everyone
pretended not to notice.
