Gary Dwyer was 32 when he arrived in Hartford. He'd already played in three leagues, two countries, and had stories from all of them. Though he only told three of them. On every. Single. Road trip.

He was the oldest guy in the room by a decade and the most reliable by a mile. His locker was the
cleanest on the team. He always had tape. He called everyone "bud." He kept a first aid kit in his bag
that he'd packed himself. He ironed his practice jerseys.

Murdoch made him an alternate captain on day one because "someone in this room needs to be an adult." The team called him Dad and they meant it. He drove The Kid to practice when his car broke down. He taught Lettuce how to do his own laundry. He talked
Knuckles out of two bar fights and into one apology.
